måste man utgå ifrån människans behov.
Unit/ Unity
Unit/Unity
Where does one begin when a bathhouse is in the works? Where did bathhouses originate? Perhaps it was by the sea, when the autumn chill made the water unbearable and people searched for a place where they could swim no matter the climate. Three bathing houses in three Swedish cities, Gothenburg, Malmö and Luleå built during ‘Folkhemsbygget’ in the first half of the 20th century were analysed. There, it was clear that the main focus lay on exercise and the swimming pool for aquatic sports was the buildings undeniable centerpiece.
The sauna and ablution seem to have a secondary role, but the function is just as important. This project is about distilling the meeting between the bathhouse’s two main functions, exercise and ablution, to peel away all the excess and find architecture that comes as close to the buildings core as possible.
Unit
What defines a room’s size? Let us use a changing room as an example and look at their smallest unit, the space to change. It is limited by the amount of space a person needs to sit and change clothes. That space multiplied by the number of users defines the room’s size. Each room has a similar smallest unit and to understand a bathinghouse’s proportions one must emanate from humans needs. Consequently the creative process focused on the different units that define a room’s dimensions. The relationship between the spaces was then defined in order to sequentially organize the spaces into a unified whole. The method created a process in which every step was determined by the previous one.Unity
What keeps all the units together? The unifying
relationship in a building is the movement of the user.
Once again the fundamental idea in architecture has to be to address the human being’s interaction with the space. In order to understand a space one has to understand its sequence. Just like one puts one’s clothes in the morning in a certain order, the user’s motions follows a intuitive logic. The logic creates the rutine and the rutine creates a sequence. From the smallest units, through the spaces that they create, and finally sown together by the sequence of motions a Bath house is created.
References
The process has distinctly been influenced by different references from the quotidian life and the architectural world. Among the references following ouvres are found: Eladio Dieste’s Church Cristo Obrero and his warehouse in the Port of Montevideo, Sigurd Lewerentz Saint Mark’s Church, Louis Kahn’s Yale Center for British Art and Sinan’s Hamam Cemberlitas. The aspects of urban planning were influenced by McDonald’s Drive- thrus, Venturi and Scott-Brown’s ideas in ‘Learning from Las Vegas’. Considering the method of creative research inspiration was found in the works of Max Lamb and Martino Gamper. They work quickly, intuitively and directly, within the spirit of ‘Just Do It’ .
