AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS
State of Colorado
1887
compiled by the
SECRETARY OF THE STATE BOARD OF AGRICULTURE
LETTER
OF
TRANSMITTAL.
HON.
J
AlVIES RICE,Secretary of State.
SIR-I have the honor to transmit herewith the
C01l1-pilation of agricultural statistics of this State for the
year 1887, as required by law,
Partial and complete returns have only been received
from th irty (30) out of the forty-two (42)counties in tIle
State.
No returns have been received from the fol lowing
counties: Archuleta, Costilla, Custer, Dolores, Elbert,
Garfield, Gilpin, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Las Animas,
Pueblo and San Juan.
I have called the attention of the Governor, in IllY
annual report, to the incompleteness and unsatisfactory
character of the returns made by the county officers, and
have suggested that provision ought to be made whereby the law 111ay be better enforced or else wholly repealed.
Respectfully sub1111tted,
FRANK
J.

AGRICULTURAL S'fA.'fISTICS. 22
CHAFFEE COUNTY.
This county reports 36r acres of peas and a yield of 8,761 bushels,
CLEAR CREEK COUNTY.
The report from this county contains the notation of
8ro bushels of turnips and 235 tons of oats-hay', in
addition to the regular returns.
DELTA COlTNTY.
The clerk makes the following notation on his report: "This is a correct copy of amounts as returned 011
agri-cul tural statistics by assessor. There is a difference in amounts given on schedules and the amounts returned on statistics. "
DOUGLAS COlTNTY.
The following opinion and suggestions are contained in the report of the clerk from this county: "In mv opinion almost utterly unreliable, consequently mislead-iug; a waste of money in the procuring, and therefore
worse than useless. A repeal of the act would seem
most desirable, judging from its operation in this
county.' ,
LA.RIIVIER COUN~ry.
The report from this county has this indorsernent by the clerk: ' 'I am ashamed to be obliged to send out a report so unsatisfactory and incomplete as the above from the best ag-ricultural county i l l the State. But it
does seem impossible to g-et anything- like a correct
SU1l1-mary by the present means employed, and only hope
that our corning Leg-islature will either provide some means of making these statistical reports more complete or abolish the svstem, "
AGIlICUL'rURAL =STA'l'IS1'ICS.
lVIONTROSE' COUNTY.
The clerk indorses the following remarks npon his
report: "This is the first year that any systematic
at-teinpt has been made to collect agricul tural statistics in
the county, therefore the returns are necessarily
incorn-plete in SOUle respects. It is hoped that another year a
still better showing will be rnade. " RIO GRANDE COUNTY.
"I desire to say I am informed by Mr. Charles Olson that it has been his earnest endeavor to secure a correct exh ibi t in the matter of these statistics, he having pre-sented and afterwards collected from each invividual h is
sworn statement in these 111atters." This indorsement
appears upon the report of the clerk of this county. In
addition to the returns contained in the regular report frOITI this county, is noted 96 acres of peas with a yield of 3,575 bushels.
SUlVIMIT COUNrfV.
The following statement from the clerk. of this
county, shows, in a striking manner, the incomplete
character of returns made: " T'his report is according
to the returns of our county assessor, but it is far from
being correct. It is only the returns from five of our
ranch men. "
,V ASHINGTON COUNTY.
TIle clerk indorses the following comments: " The
above is a correct report as returnedby the outside
depu-ties.
* *
*
There are probably 10,000 acres moreunder cultivation than were reported above. And the
nU111ber of acres of corn, and bushels, also, should be
increased roo per cent., as should also the oats cut for
feed on account of the scarcity of llay." In addition,
